What is Doxing?

Updated: Mar 8

Doxing is the act of publicly revealing or publishing private information about an individual without their consent, often in bad faith. This can include personal details such as home addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, workplace information, and other sensitive data.

In the context of California family law cases, doxing can potentially play a role in several ways:

  1. Privacy Violations: Family law cases, such as divorce, child custody, or domestic violence cases, often involve sensitive personal information. If one party is doxxed (the private details of their life are publicly shared), it can be considered a violation of their privacy or harassment, leading to emotional harm or even physical danger, depending on the severity of the exposure.

  2. Domestic Violence and Safety Concerns: In cases of domestic violence or restraining orders, the disclosure of a person’s private information can put the survivor, or protected party at increased risk. If a protected party's address or workplace is exposed through doxing, it can be considered a violation of restraining order and subject the restrained party to criminal charges.

  3. Harassment and Retaliation: Doxing may be used as a form of harassment or revenge, especially in contentious divorces and custody battles. A person might dox the other party in an attempt to discredit or intimidate them, which could further complicate legal proceedings and possibly influence custody or visitation decisions.

  4. Legal Consequences: In California, doxing can be subject to legal consequences under various laws, such as harassment statutes, stalking laws, and privacy protections. If doxing is proven to be intentional and malicious, the person responsible may face legal action, including civil lawsuits or even criminal charges.

To mitigate the risk of doxing or allegations of doxing, party's may consider making their social media accounts private of delete the accounts all together until a case has concluded.
